줄기차게 용감하게
김승희가 그린 캐릭터는 풍채가 건장하다. 그 묵직한 몸은 어쩐지 비좁은 육면체 속에서 뒤척이고 있다. 첫 번째 작품 <심경> (2014)의 처음과 끝은 깊은 산속 오막살이, 한 사람의 다리도 채 뻗지도 못하는 좁은 집이다. 가진 것은 가방 하나. 그 속에 든 것은 풍경과 분리된 잠망경이다. 바람 없는 방에서 풍경 소리가 울린다. 마음을 들여다볼 시간이다.
<심심> (2017)에는 알록달록한 큐브가 둘이다. 울룩불룩 구름 같은 몸매의 한 쌍이 떨어져 애틋하다. 거대한 주먹들이 바닥을 사정없이 내리친다. 큐브는 조각나고 심지어는 짜부라진다. 고달픈 연인은 거인의 공격에 굴하지 않고 끝까지 서로를 보듬는다.
<호랑이와 소> (2019)는 모녀 이야기다. 엄마와 딸의 목소리로 직접 지난날을 소환한다. 범띠 엄마는 어깨가 떡 벌어져 있다. 이혼하고 혼자서 딸을 키웠다. 몸을 옥죄는 육면체는 답답하고 터질듯한 마음의 모습이다. <심심>을 봤으니 마음이 쪼개진다는 것은 몸이 동강 나는 것과 같음을 이해한다. 육면체는 그런데 내면을 지키는 한 겹의 보호막일까, 보호막을 가장한 이 사회의 통제 장치일까.
김승희는 몇 가닥 선으로 보이지 않던 것들을 드러내고 온몸으로 부딪친다. 누가 깨지나 어디 한 번 붙어보자는 듯.
Determined and Dauntless
KIM Seunghee draws full and voluptuous characters. Their hefty bodies wriggle and writhe inside a cramped cube. Her first film, Mirror in Mind (2014), begins and ends in a hut deep in the mountain. There is hardly room to even stretch a leg. The character in the film possesses only a bag. Inside it, there is a wind chime and parts of a periscope. The breezeless room echoes with the sound of the wind chime—an invitation to look inside one’s own mind.
In The Realm of Deepest Knowing (2017), there is a pair of colorful cubes. Two lumpy bodies are sadly separated from each other. Giant fists slam the ground until the cubes are shattered and broken. But the weary lovers are undaunted by the giant hands and continue to embrace each other.
Tiger and Ox (2019) is the story of a mother and daughter. Their voices conjure up days from the past. The tiger mom has broad shoulders. After getting a divorce, she raised her daughter on her own. The suffocating cube that tightens around her body reveals her frustration. The Realm of Deepest Knowing showed that a mind being shattered was the same as a body breaking apart. What is the real meaning behind the cube? Is it protection for our inner thoughts, or is it the heavy hand of society in disguise to keep us under control?
KIM Seunghee uses minimal lines to reveal the things that were hidden from view and confronts them, determined and dauntless.
