장인의 창의력
김강민은 그래픽 디자인과 스톱모션 기법을 바탕으로 발표하는 작품마다 다양한 재료와 스타일, 제작 기법을 활용했다. 개인 작업의 주제는 늘 가족인데 결코 진부해지지 않는 비결이다. 종이에서 시작해 화학용품들과 3D프린터로 만든 플라스틱 퍼펫, 스티로폼과 스펀지, 재료 저마다의 특성이 새로운 발상을 요구한다. 모교이자 재직 중인 캘리포니아예술대학의 실험애니메이션과 2024년 졸업전시회를 여는 트레일러 <Flower>(2024)는 김강민의 창작 데이터와 이미지 생성 AI를 활용한 실험 영상이다. 내친김에 외할아버지를 기리는 클레이애니메이션 <The Trace of Emotion>(2008)을 AI 버전으로 탈바꿈시키고 있다. 만족스러운 결과를 얻어내는 방법은 상호적이다. 무한한 가능성에서 최선의 선택을 하는 작가의 실험은 끝이 없다.

Crafting Creativity
Kim Kangmin utilizes various materials, styles, and production techniques in each of his works based on graphic design and stop-motion techniques. The theme of his personal works is always family, but it never becomes cliché. Starting from paper to chemicals and plastic puppets made with a 3D printer, styrofoam, and sponge, each material's characteristics demand new ideas. His new experimental piece <Flower> (2024), which is the trailer of the graduation exhibition of the MFA Experimental Animation program at the California Institute of the Arts, his alma mater, and current workplace, utilizes AI-generated images derived from Kim Kangmin's creative data. He is transforming the clay animation <The Trace of Emotion> (2008), which pays homage to his maternal grandfather, into an AI version. The method of achieving satisfactory results lies in the interactive process. An artist's experiments in making the best choices from infinite possibilities are endless.
