허기와 폭력
시와 소설을 쓰는 문학작가 지망생 청년 허범욱은 어느 날 캐나다영화위원회(NFB)의 단편 애니메이션에 매혹된다. 3개월짜리 사설 애니메이션 코스에서 만든 <평범한 식사>(2009)는 그때 본 <헝거>(1974, Peter Foldes) 자장 아래 있다. 한국영화아카데미(KAFA)에 들어가서 만든 <선량한 인간들의 도시>(2011)에는 수묵화와 추상화의 임의성과 즉흥성이 넘실댄다. KAFA 장편 연구과정을 통해 약 3년 만에 <창백한 얼굴들>(2014)을 만들고 영화제 투어 후 단편 <갈라파고스>(2019)와 두 번째 장편 <구제역에서 살아 돌아온 돼지>(2024)를 발표한다.
15년 동안 허범욱이 주인공 삼은 것은 끝없는 허기를 느끼는 괴수, 실종된 손자를 찾아 헤매는 할머니, 무채색 세상의 유일한 유색인, 가정에서 학대당한 아들, 생매장된 돼지와 집단 괴롭힘의 희생자와 같은 고립된 채 고통받는 존재다. 아무리 상대방을 찌르고 쑤신다고 해도 그가 묘사하는 폭력은 결국 자기 파괴적이다. 머리부터 발끝까지 피를 뒤집어쓴 허범욱의 페르소나는 최소한의 욕구, 그저 생존을 소망한다.
Hunger and Violence
Aspiring literary writer Hur Bumwook, who writes poetry and fiction, was one day captivated by a short animations from the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). The short film Ordinary Meals (2009), which he created during a three-month private animation course, is deeply influenced by Hunger (1974) by Peter Foldes, which he saw at that time. At the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA), he created City of Good People (2011), where the spontaneity and improvisational nature of ink painting and abstract art flow freely. Through KAFA's feature-length research program, he completed On the White Planet (2014) over three years, and after a festival tour, he released the short Galapagos (2019) and his second feature The Pig That Survived Foot-and-Mouth Disease (2024).
For 15 years, Hur Bumwook has centered his work on isolated, suffering beings: a monster plagued by insatiable hunger, a grandmother searching for her missing grandson, the only person of color in a monochrome world, an abused son, a pig buried alive, and a victim of collective bullying. No matter how much they stab and strike others, the violence he portrays ultimately turns inward, leading to self-destruction. Soaked in blood from head to toe, Hur Bumwook’s persona harbors only the most fundamental desire—to survive.

어린 손자가 실종되었다. 6개월의 계속된 수사에도 경찰은 아무것도 발견하지 못한다. 사건은 미궁에 빠진다. 할머니는 이 사실을 인정할 수 없다. 손자는 분명 살아있을 것이다. 할머니는 경찰이 대부분의 수사를 진행했던 산을 홀로 오른다.
A young grandson is missing. The police have been investigating for 6 months but have found nothing. The case remains unsolved. The grandmother cannot accept this fact. She thinks her grandson is alive. Alone, the grandmother climbs up the mountain where the police had conducted most of their investigation.
