2010년 인디애니페스트 대상을 받은 <코피루왁>은 음악가를 꿈꾸는 고등학생들의 좌절을 담고 있다. 예술고등학교와 예술대학을 다닌 감독 자신이 자연스레 묻어난 이야기는 그림이나 움직임에 별다른 기복 없이 24분이라는 러닝타임을 소화했다. 졸업작품이 아니고 감독이 아직 재학 중이라는 것이 유별나게 놀라운 점이었다. 한지원은 졸업하고 얼마지 않아 그동안 만든 네 가지 단편을 묶어 극장 개봉을 했고, 70화짜리 웹툰 『피아노 마주보기』를 연재를 했다. 홀로서기 도전 작으로 2017년 11월부터 2019년 2월까지 웹애니메이션 <딸에게 주는 레시피>를 연재했다. 학창시절부터 10여 년간 꾸준히 남다른 작업량을 보여준 한지원은 운동선수를 연상시킨다. 개인 작품과 동시에 촉박한 상업 작업 역시 여러 편 진행하는데 작업 속도도 작품 수준도 좀처럼 빠지지 않는다. 단단히 훈련한 몸과 정신은 다부지다. 시야는 넓고 시선은 예리하다. 한지원의 레이스는 이제부터다.

Jiwon Han is in top form

Kopi Luwak, an animated short that received the Grand Prize at Indie-AniFest in 2010, tells the story of a despairing high school student who dreamed of becoming a musician. The director’s personal experience attending an art high school and art university informed the film. Despite a lengthy running time of 24 minutes, the film succeeded without the need for flashy imagery and movement. Surprisingly, this was not the director’s graduation film but one of several projects she made while in university. Shortly after her graduation, Jiwon Han combined the four animated shorts she had made into a theatrical release. She also published the 70-episode webtoon Facing Piano. From November 2017 to February 2019, she published the serial web animation The Recipe Given to Daughter. Han Jiwon’s highly prolific career, which spans a decade starting with her student works, brings to mind a strong athlete. She made personal works at the same time as many commercial projects with tight deadlines, always with a high degree of quality and speed. Being disciplined in both body and mind, she has a view of the world that is both broad and deep. Jiwon Han’s race is just beginning.
