웹 애니메이션 시리즈 <딸에게 주는 레시피>(2017-2019) 이후 공개된 한지원의 OTT 시리즈 <그 여름>(2021, 라프텔), 단편 <마법이 돌아온 날의 바다>(2022), 장편 <이 별에 필요한>(2025, 넷플릭스)의 배경은 모두 여름이다. 게다가 작품들은 순서대로 과거와 현재 그리고 미래의 여름을 담고 있다. 성인이 되어 어긋나는 고등학생 커플, 약혼자에게 배신당하고 아버지에게 발목 잡힌 취준생, 서로의 꿈을 응원하며 초장거리 연애를 하는 30대 남녀에게 여름은 아련한 추억이거나 괴로운 현실이거나 낭만적인 환상이 된다. 때로는 정신을 아득하게 하는 열기를 때로는 무섭게 성장하는 에너지를 표상하는 여름은 한지원 그 자체다. 매번 다른 포맷과 플랫폼을 섭렵하며 활동 반경을 넓혀 온 한지원은 오가닉 SF라는 새로운 탐사를 시작한다.

Summer Incarnate

Since the release of the web animation series The Recipe Given to Daughter (2017–2019), Han Jiwon has returned again and again to summer as a backdrop—whether in the OTT series The Summer (2021, Laftel), the short The Sea on the Day when the Magic Returns (2022), or the feature Lost in Starlight (2025, Netflix). Together, these works form a quiet arc: summers of the past, the present, and the future. For a once inseparable high school couple now grown apart, a job seeker betrayed by her fiancé and held back by her father, and a pair of thirtys sustaining a long-distance love while cheering on each other’s dreams, summer becomes by turns a wistful memory, a painful reality, or a romantic illusion. Sometimes summer is an overwhelming heat that distorts the mind, or an energetic growth that can be intimidating—all of which embody Han Jiwon herself. Ever expanding her creative reach across shifting formats and platforms, Han Jiwon now embarks on a new voyage into what she calls “organic science fiction.
